Vacations are exciting times to explore your country or those around the world. However, money doesn’t exactly grow on trees, as you’ve probably hear many times before. You can’t go on as many vacations and still expect your bank account to have a number attached to it.

This makes budgeting and saving for vacations that much more important. With a few changes to your average vacation, you might be able to take a third or a half off the price. It’s not as hard as it sounds, either.

Try some of the major discount travel sites to book discounted travel packages. Whether they are last-minute travel packages or tickets/reservations from sites that involve bidding, you can get great savings on these and other types of sites. Sometimes it’s just a matter of what tools you have at your disposal, and if you can use them well.

Don’t be afraid to branch out a little bit, too, with your vacations. You could certainly save a bit of money with a trip to Paris, though you’ll still pay a reasonable amount. However, for the sake of your budget and sense of adventure, you could consider seeing the Singing Sand Dunes and the Charyn Canyon in the Kazakhstan Democracy that is developing in the beautiful country.

Your travel budget can guide you along the way. Combine it with the right tools and travel choices to stretch your money a bit further. With careful planning, you can get the vacation and price you want.

It is important to consider entertaining your family while travelling. Fuel costs have resulted in an increase in the price of airline tickets as it takes a lot of gas to fly a plane. This is just part of the reason for a revival in road trip style vacations. Packing your family into a car for a multi-hour trip is relatively cheap, but it’s important to keep the family entertained during the trip.

Kids today engage in consistently thrilling video games and can have a hard time dealing with a long road trip. One technological innovation that has aided families on road trips are DVD players that strap on to the back of the driver or passenger side head rest. Headphones plug into these devices so the rest of the need not hear all the noise. While it’s nice to balance quiet time with the family talking together as a group, the DVD players are more affordable now than ever and can give necessary respite time for parents.

Road trips are an excellent way to introduce kids to music they haven’t been exposed to before. On the flip side, urge your kids to make a mix cd of music they like and then play the music on your trip. Have your child explain who the artist is that’s playing as well as the artist’s story. The music discussion will start a solid dialogue in the family car and create memories that will last a lifetime.

If you’re going to travel a lot or just want something fun and exciting to do along the way, geocaching is for you. Geocaching is a real world treasure hunt. All you need is a GPS (global positioning system) device, a free membership at Geocaching.com and a hunger for adventure. Here are the steps you need to take to start geocaching.

Buy a GPS device. Actually, some smart phones can be used as GPS for geocaching now. You’ll need to be able to carry it with you so don’t buy it for your car.

Go to Geocaching.com and browse for Geocaches in the area you are in. There are 1.4 million geocaches actively being used in the world – so finding one nearby shouldn’t be that hard.

Enter the number into your GPS device and start hunting. GPS devices can get you within 6 feet of a geocache, but you will still need to search for it. Geocaches are hidden, but never buried.

Once you’ve found a geocache, add your name to the log book and put it back in the cache. If there are treasures, put something of equal value back in if you choose to take them. Sometimes you will find trackables. Trackables have codes on them that can be looked up online at Geocaching.com. You’ll be amazed how far some of the trackables have traveled.

Place the geocache back where it was and move on to another. You can hide your own caches, but make sure that you understand the rules before you do.

A lot of people associate traveling with hopping into a plane and spending a few hours trying to nap while the engines roar all around them. However, people have been traveling, even in this country, for far longer than there have been airplanes. The old-fashioned method of travel was over the ground, across highways that have largely fallen out of favor with most people. But you can still take these highways just about anywhere.

For example, take US 40. While this massive length of highway no longer totally crosses the United States, it still covers many states. You could actually get on a bicycle and ride for thousands of miles, up and down its length. If you enjoy taking long trips, there really aren’t many better options. However, from US 40′s stopover in Indianapolis you can also travel north and south through half a dozen states by way of US 36. Highways have naturally changed, just as the political landscape has gone one way and then another over time, but these highways are still great ways to see the country.

Not only do you not need to be able to fly an airplane to enjoy a bunch of amazing sites. You don’t even have to have a car, if you want to work out some wanderlust. You can even walk your way down these highways, and see the sites no motorist ever seems to have time for. When you take the old-fashioned way, you get a free history lesson every time you pass over another hill or see another building set just off the road that seems abandoned and weed covered.
